01/07/2014 – Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to the Kroger grocery store located on East 7th Street. The caller reported a heavy volume of dark water running into the front of the store.

Upon arrival, the fire department determined the source to be a sprinkler line. It is presumed that the line froze and broke, sending several hundred gallons of water in to the front end of the store.

“Since it was up on racks, there did not appear to be much merchandise damaged. However, the office area sustained extensive water damage,” Said Fire Chief Eric Taylor.

Water on the floor had advanced all the way to the middle of the store in some aisles. Damage and cleanup is estimated at $15,000. Store management said the store would be closed at least until Wednesday morning, while crews worked to clean up the water. Pharmacy customers are being diverted to the Kroger Pharmacy on Division St.
